The little sweetheart in this photo is shy and quiet. She likes her own space and is quite dreamy. Children need to be able to be themselves at family photoshoots, whether boisterous and super extroverted or soft and gentle. It's important to me to know if a family has any special needs I should be thoughtful of, to make sure the moment they jump out of the car, I help them all have the best possible experience.
I like to ask parents for the names of the children before the family photo session. I try to gain their early respect and know children respond to adults who remember their names. Remembering names isn't my strong point, but I know it's important, so I give it my best shot. I learnt the importance of remembering names from my husband, who is excellent at this. He received a compliment from a teenager who told his Dad he loved how Michael remembered his name. It's the little things that mean so much. Research has shown it's one of the most simple but important things you can do to help with human relationships.
I took this photo at the Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens during an extended family photoshoot. First, there was Mum and Dad, their four children and then the partners and grandchildren.
